The Department of Physics offers bachelor's and master's study programs in physics, geophysics, meteorology and climate physics, and for the education of physics teachers. Research at the department can be divided into five major topics: Particle and Astroparticle Physics, Quantum Materials and Systems, Optics and Photonics, Geophysics, Meteorology and Climate Physics.

“On the Hunt for Neutrinos – The KATRIN Experiment” – In the penultimate lecture of this semester, Prof. Kathrin Valerius will provide an exciting glimpse into the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino Experiment (KATRIN). This globally unique facility tackles key questions in neutrino physics: What is the mass of the universe’s lightest particles? Are there more than the three known types of neutrinos? And could neutrinos be part of dark matter? Look forward to fascinating insights into the work of the international KATRIN collaboration, recent research results, and future plans for employing innovative technologies in neutrino physics. The lecture will last about an hour, followed by an opportunity to ask questions and chat with Prof. Valerius in a relaxed setting. Don’t miss it – we’re looking forward to seeing you there! Particle accelerators are used in medicine, materials research and basic research, among others. In the RF 2.0 project, KIT is working with other large particle accelerator facilities to investigate how accelerators can be operated more energy-efficiently and sustainably.

BMBF Funding for Experimental Particle Physics at KIT

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is funding the KIT with 8.2 million euros. This sum will enable the Institute of Experimental Particle Physics to play a greater role in the further development and data analysis of the two international particle detector projects CMS and Belle II.
